About this object
The photograph shows the newly formed gardens built on Marine Parade after the 3 February 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake. In the background is the wall of the Napier swimming baths and Bluff Hill. At right in the foreground is the sundial, the first feature in the new gardens, designed by architect J A Louis Hay and gifted by J R Kirk, a former Mayor of Gisborne, who was impressed by the spirit of rehabilitation following the earthquake of 1931. Underneath the photograph Ernest Sinclair has written: Napier in the making again. New - Marine Parade - Napier.
