Brief Description
Letter from J H Bethune, to Donald McLean, Auckland, dated 28 May 1861.
This letter confirms that J H Bethune received Donald McLean's previous letter.
Bethune thanks Donald McLean for the trouble he is taking on little Hector's behalf. He writes: Hector continues to remember you well, he frequently speaks of you, and desires me say that he is a very good Boy, & only cries a little bit in his Tub some times in the mornings.
Bethune goes on to mention his concerns of a foreclosure on a mortgage and suggests that the money be invested in Otago. He informs McLean that the Margarethe Roesner vessel has arrived in Wellington from Otago after landing the second load of sheep. On this matter he writes: The ship had to put into Lyttleton because of bad weather, and 60-70 sheep were lost when they fell over a cliff into the sea at night.
He also writes of politics and mentions Fox wanting to become Premier. He writes of Māori affairs, which read: we should nevertheless be glad to have a few more red Coats amongst us, to say nothing of participating in the large commissariat expenditure.
He finishes the letter on a more personal note and writes that Mrs Strang sends a box of nice things for Douglas (McLeans Son) and for Mr Strang's sixty-sixth birthday.
The Letter is signed J H Bethune. At the bottom of the letter there is a post script mentioning that Hunter is preparing the accounts. The letter is labelled Private on the outside.
