About this object
Taken prior to the Mount Tarawera eruption of 1886, Lake Rotomahana was a small geothermal lake adjacent to the Pink and White terraces. Evidence of geothermal activity is visible with steam rising amongst large rocks upon which a young Māori boy is seated. The surrounding hills are visible in the background.
