About this object
The original West Clive Hotel was built opposite the present-day Clive Hotel in 1867. This hotel, circa 1900, was the third building after the other two were burnt to the ground. Sections of the old Farndon Hotel were transported across the Ngaruroro River and put together to create a new hotel that opened in 1898. The hotel was built with high foundations due to the numerous floods that had inundated the area, especially the disastrous 1897 flood. The previous hotel, also two storied, was used as a refuge by many Clive residents during the floods. After the 1931 Hawke’s Bay earthquake the hotel was too badly damaged to be able to be repaired and was demolished.
