Brief Description
A torn piece of waxed brown paper with the following words written in tar: Ripple gone down near Castlepoint with all hands Nicholson. The message was believed to have been written in tar using a stick and was found in a bottle floating in the ocean near Gisborne in 1925. Whether the note is genuine is as yet unverified however Captain Thomas Nicholson was the Chief Officer of the SS Ripple, a coastal steamer that was lost at sea after leaving Wellington on 6 August 1924. The ship was owned by Richardson & Company Limited of Napier.
