Hastings Street, rebuilt after the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake. Businesses that are visible include The Jones Shoe Co, Helen Smith (Milliner), Beck's Pharmacy and the Criterion Hotel. The photograph is taken from the intersection of Emerson and Hastings Streets looking towards Tennyson Street and Shakespeare Road. The Clarendon Hotel can be seen in the distance at the bottom of Shakespeare Road.
