About this object
Portrait of Thomas Robert Spiller. Thomas was a foundation member of Napier's first band and is pictured in band uniform. The band was formed after a group of young men were 'tin-kettling' a newly-married friend and were arrested for disturbing the peace. The public were incensed at the treatment meted out and raised subscriptions to pay the fine and buy proper musical instruments. The foundation members of the band were Thomas Spiller and a Mr Boyd from the Western Spit.
