Object detail

Brief Description
Personal narrative of the Mendelssohn family's experience of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake. Written by Anna Walker Watson née Mendelssohn. Her memories are based around her grandparents' home at 6 Madeira Steps in Napier. When the quake struck her grandmother was in the garden and a brick chimney fell on her head. She was taken to the Racecourse hospital, presumed dead. Her aunt Ettie was in the bath and the crew of the HMS Veronica supplied her with a bathmat to preserve her modesty. An uncle in Hastings was hit by a tree and later died from septicemia resulting from his wounds.
