About this object
The image shows the beginning of the redevelopment of the gardens on Marine Parade, Napier, after the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake.

The Kirk Sundial, in the centre of the image, was the first feature introduced into the gardens. It was a gift from the mayor of Gisborne, Mr J R Kirk, to the people of Napier for their resilience after the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake. The Municipal Baths can be seen in the distance, below Bluff Hill. The area in the foreground of the image was to become a skating rink.
