About this object
View of Tapuaeharuru (Taupo) in the early 1870s. A man in a boat can be seen near one of two posts on either side of the Waikato River outlet. These were used to secure the ends of a rope that would be slung across the water to enable safe crossing of waka.
The Armed Constabulary Redoubt is visible on the clifftop on the eastern side of the river, and the small raupō building at the centre of the image was also associated with the A.C. The small wooden building on its own, close to the lake front, is believed to be the first courthouse.
The negative is possibly a copy of an original taken by photographer D L Mundy.
