Brief Description
Early Māori language translation by Robert Maunsell of the first six books of the Old Testament. A handwritten note at the top of the second title page reads: One of the books found in the tent of Mr Richard Todd after he was murdered by the 'Hauhaus' on the 28th day of November 1870.
Adhered to the first page of the Bible is a letter written by F T Barrett on Mitchell Library letterhead, dated 11 January 1900, to a Mr Campbell regarding the book and its provenance. Loose within the book is a slip of paper to which three Glasgow Herald newspaper cuttings from 1903 have been adhered: one is a letter from H G Robley responding to an earlier request for information and recommending the enquirer contact New Zealand historian Dr Hocken. Another is a reply from Gourlay W Todd, a relative of the slain man.
A bookplate on the inside cover has the initials R.T. [Richard Todd].
