About this object
Mounted photograph of a rowing team in a boat in an unidentified location.

This photograph could well be of the Napier Naval Artillery Volunteers (NNAV) and taken when their cutter was launched on Queen's Birthday 1885.

The NNAV obtained a new cutter measuring 30 feet long by 7 foot beam which was built in Auckland to Admiralty specifications. It was launched by the Mayoress of Napier and named "Beatrice", at the Spit on Queen's Birthday 1885. The officer at the helm, and the crew and Petty Officer (sitting nearest to the officer) are wearing naval uniforms typical of that period. The vessel is flying the Union Jack, also indicative of a naval vessel.
