Brief Description
Letter written by Thelma Williamson in Auckland to Margaret Hay in Napier, dated 21 December 1973. Thelma writes to thank Margaret for a gift of writing paper, and mentions Basil Ward whom she replaced at Louis Hay's office. Thelma has been busy with several draughting jobs, including illustrations for a technical drawing textbook for secondary schools.
Accompanying the letter is a handwritten copy of her tribute to Louis Hay which she included in her farewell speech at the Lands & Survey Department:
My first occupation was with Napier architect, Mr Louis Hay, where I was employed for eighteen years. He was a devotee of Frank Lloyd Wright and many buildings designed by him after the great earthquake of 1931 were characteristic of this famous American architect. Everything Mr Hay touched with pen or pencil was just sheer art. He taught me a great deal about drawing, and it was through his training that I have been able to carry out the rather specialised work of the Hauraki Gulf Maritime Park.
