The photograph, taken from a vantage point on Shakespeare Road looking out to sea, shows the damage to the Napier central business district caused by the Hawke's Bay earthquake on 3rd February 1931. Notes accompanying the album in which the image is displayed identify the Hannah's building and the ruins of the Bank of New Zealand building.
