About this object
The photograph shows King Street, Hastings, bathed in a smoky haze from the fire that started in the wake of the Hawke's Bay earthquake on 3rd February 1931. People are seen viewing the devastation; some standing in the street and others seated in the back of a utility vehicle that services Hastings and Napier. The damaged Lands for Bags shop building is visible in the centre of the image. Notes accompanying the album in which the photograph is displayed identify the collapsed brick premises of the Cosy Theatre on the left.
