Brief Description
Handwritten letter from William Colenso in Napier to W Dinwiddie, Honorary Secretary Hawke’s Bay Philosophical Institute, dated 2 August 1893, regarding books Colenso has borrowed from the Institute.
The letter reads:
Dear Sir,
Your note of enquiry re Bentham's "Flora Austral." dated "28th July" only last night came to hand among other letters from P.O.
In reply:
Vol I, dated 1863 (publication
Vol VII, do 1878 (ditto)
Full title: Flora Australiensis: A description of the Plants of the Australian Territory by George Bentham, FRS FLS, assisted by Ferdinand Mueller MD, FRS, FLS (but in last vol. Mueller's (?) thus: Baron von F Mueller CMS, FRS)
I may tell you I much regret my keeping those 7 vols here, but (1) I cannot describe any novelty (or even think of doing so) without copiously referring to them, and (2) hitherto - i.e. in former years - no one ever looked into the work but myself. Of course if required I return them at once.
Yesterday I received the enclosed "wire" - I replied, by letter, saying NO but I would enquire when I next went down to town. Do you know anything? or Large or Mr Hargreaves? I shall see her when I go to town.
Your MS. (my paper) has long been ready for returning to your proper custody - I will take it with me.
I am Dear Sir,
Yours faithfully,
[signed] W. Colenso
