Brief Description
Handwritten letter from William Colenso in Napier to H G (Henry George) Warren, dated 27 July 1897, in which he acknowledges receipt of a note from Mr Warren requesting permission to visit, and explains that he must refuse due to ill-health.
The letter reads:
Dear Sir,
I have just received your note of this day which you inform me of your intended visit on Thursday or Friday next, with your friend from England.
Under existing circumstances, I regret very much to have to say that I shall scarcely be able to receive you - for I am still very weak and cannot enter into any long or deep conversation.
I returned on Friday last, noon, leisurely travelling by stages, but have not since been over my doorstep; and yesterday I told Dr de Lisle that I did not wish to see anyone until I was stronger; and that I had even thought of putting an advertisement in our papers to request friends not to call.
Moreover, pressing business (already too long delayed) will take me to town on Thursday morning next if fine, - or if not fine on that day, then on Friday morning.
Were it otherwise with me I should be most happy to see you and your friend.
I am, Dear Sir,
Yours faithfully,
[signed] W. Colenso.
Also a note written in a different hand (presumably Warren's) that reads: With HGW’s Compts for your autograph book.
