Brief Description
Letter written by Fred Hamshar at Barrack Hill, Napier, to his brother Tom in England, dated 11th February 1889. Fred writes that his daughter Alice is at the toddler stage. He left the breakwater works last November, after being shipwrecked while working on the barges laying the foundation. He is now employed as a handyman at the new Hawke's Bay Foundry which is owned by two young men who started out only four years ago. Fred describes the varied tasks for which he has been made responsible. He is earning less than at the breakwater, but loses no time [for bad weather] and has had overtime every week so far. He had two or three good months at the breakwater working on the hopper barge, "but out all hours sometimes from 3 in the morning till 10 at night working with the tide and soaking wet all the time...it was impossible to keep dry and not safe to wear oilskins for fear of a capsize."
