Brief Description
Letter written by Fred Hamshar in Opoiti [Opouiti], Hawke's Bay, to his brother Tom in England, dated 20th November 1877. Fred describes a day tramp to Te Reinga with his friends, two Englishmen and an Australian, and the fine view of the waterfall from the top of the hill, with the Wakapunake [Whakapunake] to the right. Fred suggests paying a visit to the Maoris. He says that many were away shearing in Poverty Bay, but the dozen remaining were keen to hear the latest news. Fred has finished fencing and is now cattle mustering. There has been a long stretch of fine hot weather which has dried swamps and creeks but they are never short of water. Fred is busy making a stock whip 20 feet long, and gets great credit for his plaiting skills. Mustering cattle that have been running up in the mountain for a year is especially gruelling work. Fred ends his letter with a greeting in Māori.
