Brief Description
Postcard with embossed card frame displaying a silk organza fabric envelope embroidered with silk flowers and the words: Happy Xmas; the flap opens to reveal a small removable gift card with the words: Compliments of the Season.
Sent from Brocton Camp, England. Dated October 14, 1917.
Message reads: Dear Het, Just a short note to let you know I have not quite forgotten you and that I am in the best of health as I hope you are. This camp Brocton is a hard thing and makes one think there is a war on, nothing but frost, rain and smoke. The smoke comes from Birmingham which is about 25 miles from here and the frost and rain well you know where that comes from. The drill here is real solid and the sooner I get to France the better I will like it. The tucker here is very good although scarce and we get fish and good sausages pretty often. I suppose Jim told you about the Clive boys I met. Well Het, there is nothing much to write about here so I will close with best wishes for a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year from yours sincerely, Jim Hellyer (James Hellyer, New Zealand Rifle Brigade)
