About this object
A diamond shaped work, in shades of blue. Tai Aroha relates to Israel's father, who was a keen diver and gave Israel the name Tangaroa, passing on his love of the sea. The work is part of a the series Prayers and Proverbs, in which Israel draws upon images of water from karakia and whakataukī to create a body of work through which multiple, hidden narratives flow. Israel's signature patterned textures, achieved by grinding and sanding, create visual planes that appear to be in a continual state of flux: mimicking the vagaries of water, while setting up powerful illusions of depth and space within the picture planes.
