The image shows damaged buildings and debris along Hastings Street, Napier, in the aftermath of the Hawke's Bay earthquake. The photograph has been taken from the Caledonian Hotel (not visible) corner. A man wearing a hat, with his back to the camera, surveys the devastation. The view of the end of the street is obscured by clouds of dust and smoke.
