Brief Description
Letter written by John Davies Ormond to Francis Edward Hamlin, Napier, regarding Hamlin travelling to Wairoa to raise a Native force for the occupation of Onepoto (Urewera). Ormond advises Hamlin to "make known to Paora Te Apatu and Tamihana the object of your mission and personally communicate... with Ihaka Whanga (Whaanga)", and states that the main objective for the forces is to occupy Onepoto to keep command of the roads in the vicinity and prevent the enemy escaping towards Poverty Bay or Wairoa or Mohaka.
