William Colenso came to New Zealand in 1834 as printer to the Church Missionary Society. The booklet provides an account of the introduction of printing in New Zealand and issuing the first portion of the New Testament, with remarks on the characters or alphabet used in the edition and on the New Zealand language generally. The title page records that the text was read before the Hawke's Bay Philosophical Institute on 17 October 1887.
Two illustrations appear in the booklet, one representing Paihia, the other Waitangi.
