The bound volume of magazines is titled: The Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine, Fashion Plates and Needlework Patterns was edited by Madame Adolphe Goubaud.
The book of bound magazines was printed in 1865 and published by S O Beeton, London. Contents include fashion plates, coiffures, patterns for embroidery and lace, published novelettes, operas and musical entertainment, and family life. There are twelve monthly issues bound together covering Nos. 57 to 68, Volume 10.
The book was a Christmas present from William Villers to his sister Sarah Elwin in 1866. The Villers family lived in Petane, Hawke’s Bay and were directly related to the McKain and Torr families. Robina McKain, daughter of Douglas Mary McKain, married William Villers and their daughter was Sarah. New Zealand artist Nigel How is descended from these families. He writes: the images of the collars in the book fascinated me and have influence in my whītau or muka work.
