The photograph shows the destruction caused to the left wing of the Isolation ward at the Napier Hospital after the 3 February 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake.
The building has completely collapsed leaving the roof almost intact on top of the debris. Stan Buchanan has written on the back: Left wing Isolation Ward.
