About this object
The photograph shows the damage caused by the 3 February 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake to a wooden house situated on the top of Bluff Hill, Napier. The house belongs to the Geddis family. There is a white x on the image marking the doorway of the garage which is seen perched on the edge of the cliff. The cliff has fallen away. A caption written underneath the photograph reads: Gedde's [sic] House Bluff Hill, X garage.

I went to see this particular spot today September 2020. I talked to the owner and he told me that there was a tennis court between the garage of that building and the house on the right that can't be seen (Waimarie Homestead). The road went further but eventually stopped before the Lighthouse Reserve that was designated to have the new Napier Lighthouse which was never built on the end. Apparently when the tennis court came down it hit a taxi below and some people had been killed that day.
