The photograph depicts part of the Old Men's Home at Park Island after the 3 February 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake.

In the photograph a man can be seen pointing at a spot where James Collins was found lying on a bed after being buried. Underneath the image is written: Note the spot where James Collins aged 67 was buried for 4 nights and 3 days and found alive at old Men's Home, Napier.
