The photograph depicts a group of people outside the Hastings Street School.

The school was used as a food depot after the 3 February 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake. In the foreground can be seen two men in naval uniform and on the left is a man carrying two cups of tea. Underneath the image is written: Naval cooks at Napier HB.
