The school was used as a food depot for refugees after the 3 February 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake. Tables have been set up in the foreground at which people can be seen having meals. There is a broom leaning up against a table. Underneath the image is written: Hastings St School at Napier where meals were served daily.
