About this object
The photographic postcard shows Anzacs at Flers in France. A party of New Zealanders, who have been at work consolidating a trench, are enjoying a rest with bread and jam. They are in a trench near the town of Flers in France in 1916. The photograph has been glued to a page in Leo Bestall's diary.
The soldier second from the left has been identified as Neil McKenzie McQueen, who lived at Waipukurau following the war. Sixth from the left, holding a rifle in his right hand, is Douglas Rawei McLean who was posted to Napier for 10 years in the 1920s, working for The Union Bank of Australia.

You may be interested in that this photo is a cropped version of the original, which is part of the Imperial War Museum collection (Q194) I have identified the soldiers present in the photo as being from the Canterbury Section, 2nd Company, New Zealand Machine Gun Company. I can provide documentary evidence if you are interested. The soldier 6th from the left, holding the rifle in his right hand, is my Great Uncle, Douglas Rawei McLean. He has association with the Hawkes Bay. After the war he was posted to Napier for 10 years in the 1920s, working for The Union Bank of Australia. Details of his life can be found in the Alexander Turnbull Library collections. Also is granddaughter has posted some of his war letters online. One of the other soldiers, Neil McKenzie McQueen (2nd from the left) also lived in the Hawkes Bay after the war at Waipukurau.
