About this object
The photograph is of four soldiers standing and sitting outside a tent.The photograph has been glued to a page in Leo Bestall's diary. Above the photograph Leo has written, On the Somme in 1916. Underneath are the words: Our Squad. Scivington, Carruthers No 4, Leo Bestall, McCarthy. Coldstream Guards Camp, Fricourt.

The photograph is of Leo Bestall's stretcher-bearer squad. At back left is Edward Skivington (23/281), who died of wounds in May 1917. At back right is Wally Carruthers (3/85), leader of the squad, who was awarded a Military Medal for ‘setting a fine example of courage and coolness under fire‘ at the Somme. Sitting in front is Leo Bestall on the left, and his close fried 'Mac' McCarthy, also from Napier.
