About this object
The photograph shows commercial buildings in Hastings Street damaged in the 3 February 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake and engulfed by flames. Following the earthquake, fire took hold and many of the buildings in the central business area were completely destroyed. The fireman is Superintendent William James Gilberd. The shoe shop belonging to F Thorp (Thorps) can be seen behind the car. Along the bottom of the photograph is written: Fire follows Quake. Napier 1931.
