Brief Description
a. Lucy Anna Fox Hodgkin's illustrated journal links the Hawke's Bay via the Quaker community, John Holdsworth, and Swarthmoor. It is an exquisite example of an early 20th century woman's travel journal. It was used in the MTG Hawke's Bay exhibition titled: Dr Felkin and the Forerunners.

The journal begins with the sentence: Thos (her husband), Lucy Violet, known as Violet (her daughter), George (either her brother or son) Hodgkin left London on the 22nd January 1909. They sailed on board the S.S. Orontes to Australia. Once in Australia they boarded another vessel to travel to New Zealand.

The voyage took them to Egypt, Colombo, Freemantle, Tasmania and New Zealand, back to Australia and then home to England. While in New Zealand Dr Thomas Hodgkin gave a paper about Roman architecture at the Canterbury College Hall, Christchurch. In Wellington the family attended the first New Zealand Quaker's conference. They arrived in Napier on 18 May 1909 where they stayed with John Holdsworth at Swathmoor, Havelock North. They visited the Johnson's at Orua Wharo, stayed at the Hutchinson's home at Omatua, Rissington and the Whites at Sherwood. The group also visited Rotorua, the far North, Kawau Island and Auckland. They left New Zealand to visit Australia. While in Australia Dr Hodgkin gave lectures.

In her journal Lucy records her impressions, thoughts and the daily occurrences which took place during the voyage, stopovers, trips inland, church services and friends they met. Throughout, Lucy has sketched using watercolour landscapes, botanical specimens, bird life and jottings. She has attached them to relevant diary entries. Interspersed throughout the journal are photographs, postcards, dance cards, concert programmes and newspaper cuttings. The last date in the journal is 19 November 1909.
On the first page of the journal Lucy has glued a map of Australia and New Zealand and opposite are people's signatures.
