Brief Description
A letter addressed to my dearest father from E Webb, Marmion Place, Monday 19 May 1834.

In the letter he writes that Jonathan is determined to go to sea. Jonathan was touched by the letters he had sent to him but nothing seems to move him from his desire. Advice had been given that the Admiralty never appointed any midshipman to ships except those who had been at the Naval College. The St Vincent has been recommissioned and Sir Lucius Curtis is to be Captain. They are going to try to get Jonathan on board the St Vincent however it was doubtful whether it would be much use. E Webb had had a letter from Colonel Napier who was of the opinion that a boy would get on better on the East India ships rather than the Royal Navy.

He continues, he has a boil under his arm which makes writing difficult; how kind his father's friends the Webbs were to him; he heard the Dean of Hereford preach at St Paul's which was one of the most stupid sermons he had had the misfortune to hear; the music was grand and he had a full view of the Queen. He finishes the letter by describing other church services and sermons. He is glad that his mother and father are well and he is looking forward to their arrival at Portsmouth.

The letter has been folded in such a way that it acted as the envelope. It is addressed to: Reverend J Edmondson, A.M. Rochester. On the back is part of the red wax seal. There was a stamp which has been removed leaving a gap in the letter.
