About this object
The photograph is of an unidentified New Zealand soldier, World War I. He is holding a riding crop in his right hand. He may have been a member or friend of the Luff family, Hastings.
The soldier wears the uniform of the New Zealand Mounted Rifles. His cap badge is that of the 9th Reinforcement (B Company) and he wears a collar badge depicting a rampant horse, commonly used for mounted rifles reinforcements, and in the same pattern as that of the 9th Wellington (East Coast) Mounted Rifles badge. The 9th Reinforcements departed New Zealand for Egypt in January and February 1916.
