Printed on the back of the photograph is: Napier, N.Z. Pania of the Reef.
An old Maori legend tells how Pania, lured by the siren voices of the sea people, swam to meet them. When she endeavoured to return to her lover, she was transformed into the reef which now lies beyond the Napier Breakwater. Beside her two Maori maids sing an action song while the lad challenges with the challenge stick Taiaha.
It is part of the Colourchrome Series.
