In the front of the book is written: This book was found amongst Woodhouse family papers in January 1957. The Mellard family were cousins of the Woodhouse family, their mother being the daughter of Judge Bathgate of Dunedin, who brought his family from Scotland in 1863. Edward Mellard, father of the three girls, to whom the book was given, was an Englishman who took up land in Otago, and had a house in Dunedin. Eventually the family went to live in England, early in the 1900s. Besides the three eldest girls there was one son, Guy, killed in action in the 1914-18 war, and a younger daughter Ruth., Inscription, Handwritten
