The portrait depicts a group of New Zealand convalescent soldiers sitting and standing in an army canteen in an unidentified military hospital in England. All are wearing hospital blues. All are unidentified. The variety of cap badges confirm the men are from a number of different regiments. A notice records that the canteen is closed. There are vases of flowers of the serving counter.
