About this object
The photograph shows Anna Elizabeth Jerome Spencer, known as Jerome by Country Women's Institute members but as Bessie amongst her family, demonstrating spinning at the Women's Institute booth at the New Zealand and South Seas International Exhibition in Dunedin.
Bessie is wearing clothing made from handspun and handwoven fabric. Her large spinning wheel can be seen positioned behind her. On the shelves are examples of the homemade craft items that members had made. There are also skeins of spun wool hanging from the loom.
Between 1952 and 2004 in New Zealand the Women's Institutes were renamed Country Women's Institutes.
