The letter is addressed to 'My dear cousins' and is written by Alice Webb, Sussex, England.
In the letter Alice thanks her cousins for their kind letter of sympathy, shows concern about the bitterly cold winter and how 'our poor dear Soldiers in France might be faring.' Alice writes about Grantley a soldier who came home on a few days leave but was very restless and could not sleep because of his experiences at the Front, in particular the noise of the guns and the sights he had seen. A young soldier, who was a Bank Clerk in New Zealand and is without friends in England, will spend his leave with Alice. She writes about daylight saving in England, the price of food which is very expensive in 1917. She finishes by telling about her brother's three sons who joined the army in 1914. One was killed in action in France, the eldest one is at the Front in France and the youngest is in hospital severely wounded. She records that the callousness of some of the English people who have not lost relations in 'this cruel war' make her feel very bitter and 'there are plenty of them not worth fighting for.'
