Hardie writes about being shipped off to Vietnam, his unit being in Phuoc Tuy Province, a new strain of malaria hitting his unit, conditions on base and out on patrol, soldiers growing moustaches while on operations, using the local currency and US dollars, seeing Kiwi and American troops carrying high-powered pistols in town, and going out soon on a defensive patrol.
