Hardie writes about being confined to barracks for 3 days for disobeying an order by not getting a haircut, travelling through the Cook Strait on the Wahine, flying by air to Wellington, sending items of clothing home, his new address in Malaysia at Terendak Camp, the coming flight to Singapore, strict orders for food in Malaysia, a meal at camp, including a photograph with the letter, and taking currency with him to Malaysia.
