Brief Description
The letter was written by Mr J McEnery of 94 Waghorne Street, Port Ahuriri, to his niece Hellen (sic) and is dated 22 August 1932.

In the letter Mr McEnery records his experiences during the 3 February 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake. He writes that: I have had a very rough spin of it since the time of the quake 1½ years ago which wrought such appalling destruction of life & property in this district.

Nell, his daughter, who was 'the life and soul of the house' was killed in the earthquake. The family had to search the debris for 'her mortal remains which nearly drove us mad.' He tells Helen about how they set to work to fix the house. Not long after the earthquake, Mary, his daughter, who was his housekeeper and constant attendant for the previous 14 years, died. He also discusses the economic depression and how New Zealand is suffering, particularly through unemployment. He also writes about the Government currently in power in New Zealand.
