Brief Description
The letter regarding Captain Preece's Victoria Cross. The letter reads:
Native & Defence Office, Wellington
12th May 1876
To Inspector Goring, Commander of Military District Opotiki.
Sir
Under instructions from the Honourable Native Minister I have the honor to transmit herewith for Sub Inspector Preece, a New Zealand Cross awarded to him for gallant conduct as shewn (sic) in the accompanying extract from the New Zealand Gazette. Sir Donald McLean desires me to request you will be good enough to take an early opportunity of assembling the Colonial Forces in your District at a special parade, when you will present the decoration with as much ceremony and display as possible. At the presentation you will be good enough to cause to be read, the notice from the Gazette after which the extract is to be handed to Sub Inspector Preece with the decoration. You will also be good enough to furnish to this office a detailed report of the ceremony of presentation.
