Brief Description
Letter from Bernard Madden to his family in Napier dated 27 January 1942.
a) Bernard talks about his unit resting in a spot outside of Tripoli, the fast pace of advance into Libya, breaking down in No Man's Land, advancing on a plantation, trekking through reclaimed lands and the destruction and looting of property. Bernard also describes the area he is staying in in detail, being posted to a gun from his driving job, as well as New Year's Eve celebrations. Bernard mentions that he has received a letter from Aunt Bid, hopes for a quick end to the war, new faces in the camp and wanting to hear news about the family and for photographs to be sent to him.
b) Addressed to Mrs P J Madden, 21 Macdonald Street, Napier, Hawke's Bay. Envelope entitled: Active Service. Includes a postage stamp and two censors stamps. Signed by Bernard Madden as having accepted terms of sending mail.
