Brief Description
Letter and envelope from Bernard Madden to his family in Napier, dated 21 December 1941.
a) Bernard talks about a trip to Libya, the fact that Pat Madden has been listed as missing in action but is most likely alive based on information from his comrades, details the events which led to his capture, taking leave soon with Bill Madden and worries about mail getting home on time as the Japanese have declared war in the Pacific. Bernard also details a trip into Libya as part of a salvage operation to recover scrap and other materials from a battle area near their camp. Describes visiting Tobruk and the damage that was done to the area by the siege, as well as including an assessment of Italian troops. Bernard states that a large lot of mail has arrived and that he has sent a few bits of mail himself. Also mentions seeing Mick Downing and Lawrie Beach from Napier at Mass and thanks his mother, Louisa, for a jacket she has sent.
b) Envelope is addressed to Mrs P Madden, 21 Macdonald Street, Napier. Envelope is marked: Air Mail/Par Avion, Active Service. Signed by Bernard Madden as understanding conditions set out on envelope. Includes censors stamp.
