The photograph shows Marine Parade, Napier, taken after the 3 February 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake. The building on the left was the YMCA which lots its second storey during the quake.

On the back is written: The remains of the South African War Memorial, Marine Parade, Napier. Behind the memorial on the left is the remains of a building and on the right is the debris from the Masonic Hotel.
