About this object
A photograph of the Country Queen, Mrs Gladys Elizabeth Jane Hudson, taken at Windsor Park in Hastings on 8 November 1952. She is shown shaking a woman's hand. The Country Queen is accompanied by the Chairman, Mr Gavin Richmond Baillie, two flower girls, Juliet Barker and Sally Stead, and three Maids of Honour, Kathleen Beamish, Josephine Glazebrook, and Marian Stead. One of the Maids of Honour is obscured by the Country Queen. A bouquet is all that is visible the Maid of Honour on the extreme right of the picture.

One of four carnival queens, the Country Queen was crowned the winner of the Hastings and District War Memorial Appeal, Queen Carnival Campaign. The photograph was taken immediately after the announcement.

In the background on the left side of the photograph, two of the women who acted as the Maids of Honour for the Māori Queen, Mrs Bella Omeka Gillies, can be seen.
