Group portrait of members of the first life saving class at the Te Awa Swimming and Life Saving Club. The nine men are posed on a beach in two rows. The men are identified on the mount as:
Back row (from left to right): N McCartney (Examiner), N J Hamlin, P J Timlin, G E Hatherley, and C H Simmonds (Instructor).
Front row (from left to right): W J ---ter [name partly illegible], A Nelson, J G Fraser, and A T Godfrey.
Absent: F Darling (Examiner).
A note on the mount states that the group were examined in April 1913.
